SEO Strategies for Increasing Organic Traffic

Plumbing is the most local trade there is. Nobody searches “best plumber in Canada”. They search “plumber near me” from a kitchen with water on the floor, and Google answers with three companies within a few kilometres. If you are not one of the three, the others get the call, and the homeowner never finds out you existed. Local SEO for a plumber is the work of becoming one of the three, in every city you drive to.

How Google picks the three plumbers

Three factors, in Google’s own words: relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your Google Business Profile matches what was searched. Distance is how far your listed location is from the searcher, which you cannot change but can work around. Prominence is how well known you are, which for a plumber means reviews, mentions and links. Everything below moves one of those three.

1. The profile, done properly

  • Primary category “Plumber”. Add secondary categories only for what you actually do: drainage service, water heater installation, gas fitter if licensed.
  • Services with prices. Drain cleaning, hot water tank replacement, leak repair, sump pumps, perimeter drains, backflow testing. A “from” price on each filters the calls you do not want.
  • Hours that include your real emergency availability. If you answer at 11 pm, say so. If you do not, do not claim 24 hours; Google’s Local Services Ads and reviews will catch it.
  • Photos of vans, crews and jobs, monthly. A photo of a replaced water heater in a Burnaby crawlspace is worth more than a logo.
  • Service areas that match where you go. Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, Richmond, North and West Vancouver, and out to Coquitlam if that is true. Not the whole province.

2. Reviews that say what you fixed and where

A plumber with 300 reviews outranks and out-converts one with 30, but the words matter too. “Fixed our burst pipe in East Van at midnight” tells Google you do emergency work in Vancouver; “great guy” tells it nothing. Ask every customer, by text, within the hour, with a direct link and a hint about what to mention. The full system is in the review guide; for plumbers the key is that the technician asks before leaving, because the relief of a fixed leak fades fast.

3. The distance problem, and the honest way around it

If your shop is in Burnaby, you will struggle to appear in the map pack for a searcher in Richmond. Fake addresses and virtual offices get profiles suspended. The honest workarounds: a city page on your website for each city with real jobs and reviews from there, which lets the organic results carry you where the map cannot; Google Ads for the cities where you want calls before the map pack catches up; and, if the business genuinely grows to a second location, a second real profile.

4. The website pages a plumber actually needs

One page per service, with the price range, what is included and what changes the price. One page per city. And one page built for the emergency: “Emergency plumber Vancouver, 24/7”, loading in under two seconds, phone number at the top that dials with one tap, three-line form underneath for people who cannot talk. That emergency page gets more ad clicks and organic visits than the rest of the site combined in a cold snap. The structure is the same as the one we describe for electricians.

5. Consistency across the web

Your name, address and phone must be identical on the profile, the website footer, Yelp, HomeStars, BBB, Canada411 and the trade directories. An old New Westminster address still showing on three directories quietly undermines the profile. It is boring, it takes an afternoon, and it is a real ranking factor for the map pack.

6. Local links

A plumbing supplier that lists its contractors, a strata management company that names its preferred trades, a community association you sponsor, a local news piece about the water main break you helped with. Five of these do more than five hundred directory submissions. They are also the kind of links competitors cannot buy.

What to expect

Profile and review fixes usually move map rankings inside 60 to 90 days in Metro Vancouver. City pages take a few months to rank organically. The emergency page pays back immediately if you run ads to it. Tracking tells you which of these produced calls, which is why our local SEO plans start with the tracking setup and the profile in the same week.

Frequently asked questions

How do I rank my plumbing business in a city where I have no office?

Through the organic results and ads rather than the map pack: a real city page with jobs and reviews from there, plus Google Ads targeted to that city. Never use a fake address.

How many reviews does a plumber need in Vancouver?

More than the two companies above you in the map pack, arriving steadily. In most Metro Vancouver cities that means well over a hundred, with several new ones a month.

Should a plumber run Google Ads as well as local SEO?

Usually yes, especially for emergency searches and for cities where the map pack is out of reach. Ads buy calls now; local SEO makes them cheaper over time.

Does a 24/7 claim help rankings?

Only if it is true. Google’s Local Services Ads track answered calls, and unanswered “24/7” lines produce bad reviews that cost more than the claim gains.
